Choosing a Baby Stroller Off Road

If you love to walk, hike, bike and enjoy the great outdoors, you need a stroller that can keep up with your active lifestyle. A baby stroller off road should have big, puncture-proof tires with suspension for a smooth ride over any terrain. It should also be able to fold up small enough to fit in your car or wherever you plan to store it when not in use.

You’ll want to choose a stroller with a five-point harness that minimizes the chances of your child moving around or being ejected during a bumpy ride. Look for a canopy with good coverage to shield your baby from sun and wind. The seat should be comfortable with a lie-flat recline and plenty of padding for your little one to stretch out and relax or snooze during the stroll.

Many all-terrain strollers offer the option of attaching an infant car seat for use with newborns. Others have a converter attachment so that you can use them with older kids as well. The best all-terrain strollers also have front wheels that swivel to give you a better ability to maneuver through tight spaces or take sharp turns.

The Colugo Compact rolled beautifully on all of the surfaces we tried and made crisp, tight turns in the test course. It’s lightweight, has a spacious bottom storage basket that can accommodate a backpack and is on the smaller side of travel strollers when folded so it fits easily in most trunks. It has an excellent adjustable leg rest and simple, easy-to-use reclining system for babies and toddlers. It even has a near-flat napping position.

Another strong contender is the UPPAbaby Ridge, which has foam-filled tires that roll and feel like real tires with air. These are a major plus since flat tires can be a major drag when you’re miles from home and have a kid in tow. It’s pricy though and doesn’t have fully upright seating.

The BOB Gear Alterrain Pro is our overall top performer. It has an amazing SmoothShox suspension system and ultra-padded seat that will have your child feeling as if they are floating on a cloud over every stone, rock or tree root. It’s more expensive than some of our other top performers, but it is still less than half the price of a top-of-the-line jogging stroller.

Another great option is the gb Pockit+, which has front swivel wheels and a small, portable size that makes it ideal for traveling. It’s super lightweight and has a simple, adjustable leg rest that doesn’t require a complicated strap clasp. It has a great canopy with a peekaboo window and good ventilation, as well as an extra-large storage basket that can accommodate a backpack. It also offers a near-flat napping position that’s perfect for older kids and toddlers. It also has a high-performance rain cover that keeps your child dry when it’s pouring.
